Our Guide To Boilers

How Do Boilers Work?

One of the most important parts of your home is your boiler, we forget about it when it’s working, but we miss it instantly when there’s a problem.

All boilers work on the same principle, even though the specifics start to change depending on the type of boiler you have installed in your home.

Broadly speaking your boiler uses gas, electricity, or oil as fuel to generate heat, which is then used to heat up water inside the boiler. This heated water (or steam) generated in the boiler is then sent throughout the home via your radiators where it gives off heat to warm the air. Once this water cools back down it returns to the boiler where the process is repeated until your home reaches a set temperature and your thermostat tells the boiler to turn off.

All modern boilers are now something called Condensing Boilers, regardless of fuel. This means that they use leftover heat from heating up the water inside the boiler to help reheat it when it comes back through, producing less wastage and making your boiler even more energy efficient and cost effective for you.

Types of Boilers

Every home is different, with different needs in terms of heating and fuel types. There are also lots of different types of boilers, but they mainly fall into two different categories. They can either be grouped together by the way the fuel the boiler uses, or by the way boiler works. Fortunately, there are enough boilers out there to make sure that the one best suited for your home is easy to find.

Gas Boilers

The most common type of boiler in the UK, with the majority of homes connected to the gas network.

LPG Boilers

An LPG boiler is one of the best options for the 4 million UK homes that aren’t connected to the gas network.

Oil Boilers

An Oil boiler is another of the options available for off grid homes in the UK. Similar to LPG, but with different pros and cons.

Electric Boilers

An electric boiler is ideal for any home wanting to go green with their next upgrade, or for some off grid homes.

Why Upgrade Your Boiler?

A good quality working boiler is integral in any home, yet so many homes have old and failing boilers which cause so many problems.

With energy prices higher than ever, there has never been a more important time to consider replacing your boiler with an energy efficient A rated boiler from a well-known brand.

Homeowners can save up to £350 per year with an A rated boiler as well as having peace of mind with up to 10 year manufacturers’ warranty. New boilers are also cheaper to take out maintenance plans and have generally lower running costs over their lifetime.

Modern boilers are also kitted out with fantastic features such as smartphone app connectivity which allow you to control your heating from anywhere using smart thermostats.

The price of boilers is also a lot less than you might think – for years large national companies overcharged for boilers leaving many people thinking new boilers are unaffordable!

Boiler Manufacturers

There are multiple different boiler manufacturers in the UK, which means the market for a new boiler is full of great options for consumers to choose from.  Each manufacturer has a different offering in terms of what types of boilers they provide, what types of fuel their boilers utilise, and what sets them apart from the competition.

Boiler FAQs

We know boilers can be complicated and choosing to replace or upgrade yours is a big decision.  There are a lot of questions that can come to mind when deciding in what boiler is the right one for you, so we have gathered some of our most frequently asked questions in one easy place to make the decision-making process a little easier for you.

Modern boilers are significantly more energy efficient than previous models.  Legislation came into place in 2018 meaning all boilers installed in the UK today must be at least 92% efficient.

This means that for every £1 spent on running your boiler, only 8p will go to waste heat and gases, and many boiler companies are striving for even more efficiency.  These improvements will not only make your boiler better for the planet, but compared to an older, less efficient model, they will make a positive impact on your energy bills.

A condensing boiler is a type of boiler technology that maximises the efficiency of the boiler, ensuring that only the minimum amount of waste gases and heat is lost therefore making them as environmentally friendly and cost-effective as possible to run.

In 2005 legislation came into force to make sure that every new boiler installed in the UK is a condensing boiler, so no matter which you choose, it will be condensing.
