Honest Knowledge

How does a Solar Only Installation work?

A solar panel only installation is exactly that, it means that you would have solar panels installed on your home without any battery back-up to store the excess energy your panels will inevitably produce.

Solar panels typically produce the least amount of energy in the morning and evening, and produce the most throughout the day. For most people, the most energy their panels produce will be at a time of the day when they aren’t home – hence the battery.

However, this doesn’t mean that having solar panels only is a bad thing, you can still save money on your energy bills with a solar only installation.

Will Solar Panels Save Me Money?

The likelihood is yes, they probably will. Without knowing individual circumstances and your household energy needs it is impossible to say for certain, however the likelihood is yes.

There are a couple of different ways that solar panels will still save you money even without a battery. The first is your personal circumstances. When solar panels generate electricity the first thing they do with that electricity is make sure that anything in your house that needs energy has it. In practical terms this means that everything plugged in, such as fridge freezers, boilers, smart thermostats, laptops for working from home etc. are all powered first – then any excess energy is dealt with.

The other great way that solar panels will save you money on your energy bills is through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme. The SEG is a scheme set up by the UK government that ensures that energy companies over a certain size have to offer at least one tariff that buys clean, green energy back from small producers – including people like yourself with solar panels on their home.

What does this mean for you? Put simply it means that any energy you send back to the national grid you should be able to be paid for.
