Honest Knowledge

What is a Oil Boiler?

An oil fed boiler works in essentially the same way as a gas boiler, providing heating and hot water for your home by heating water and passing this through a heat exchanger to provide heating and hot water, it just uses oil as the fuel to heat the water, rather than gas.

The major difference with an oil boiler is that the oil used as fuel is held externally to the boiler, meaning that you will need to have both a provider who will deliver the oil regularly, as well as a large tank to store the oil.

Benefits of a Oil Boiler

First and foremost oil is an affordable and accessible fuel to burn for those off grid.  You can choose to either have your oil boiler installed externally, or in your home.

One of the other biggest benefits of having an oil boiler installed is that oil boilers also come in up to 90% efficient, modern boiler types.  Not only that, but every new oil boiler that is installed today has to be a condensing boiler, meaning that no matter what type of boiler you choose, it will be an upgrade on any existing oil boiler you already have installed.  The only difference between a condensing oil boiler and an equivalent gas boiler is the fuel that they burn, otherwise they work the same way.

Because you can get a new boiler of up to 90% efficiency your bills are very likely to go down.  90% efficiency means that for every £1 spent running the boiler, only 10p will go to waste, so the boiler holds on to more heat meaning you’ll be paying less to heat your home, and won’t need to refill your tank as often.

Types of Oil Boilers

The main types of boiler that are available that can be run by natural gas are shown below.

Combi Boilers

The most common type of boiler in the UK. Combi boilers take their water directly from the mains water supply, and heat it as required by your taps/showers and heating system, meaning there is no need for large water tanks in the home

System Boilers

Work in a similar way to combi boilers as they take their water from the mains storage system, but then store their hot water in a separate storage tank in order to provide instant hot water.  They are the ideal option for larger homes with a high hot water demand.

Regular Boilers

A regular boiler is the oldest type of boiler system available and works by drawing its hot water from a large cold water tank in the loft or attic, heating that in the boiler, and then delivering that hot water to a hot water storage tank.
