Honest Knowledge

What is a LPG Boiler?

LPG stands for Liquified Petroleum Gas and is a type of fuel made up of gaseous hydrocarbons which are produced from natural gas and oil extraction (66%) and oil refining (34%).  An LPG boiler works in the same way as a natural gas boiler in that it burns fuel to heat water which is then used in either your central heating, or for your hot water.

The difference between an LPG boiler and other types is that the fuel it burns needs to be stored externally in a tank.

Benefits of a LPG Boiler

An LPG boiler isn’t going to be the right option for every home, it probably isn’t the right option for most homes.  However, for the homes that it is the right option for it has a lot of benefits.

LPG boilers are cheaper than oil boilers, both to install and most likely to run too depending on your circumstances.  When it comes to up front costs for a new LPG boiler, they can be almost half the price of a new oil boiler.

Not only are LPG boilers more efficient than an oil boiler, but LPG is cleaner fuel than oil too.

One of the other great perks when it comes to LPG boilers is that they are widely available, giving you way more choice when it comes to choosing the right one for you thanks to market leaders like Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Baxi all offering models in their boiler ranges, so you don’t have to worry about being restricted in terms of finding the right one for you.

Types of LPG Boilers

There are 3 different types of boiler available in LPG fuel, a combi boiler, a system boiler, and a regular (or heat only) boiler.

Combi Boilers

The most common type of boiler in the UK. Combi boilers take their water directly from the mains water supply, and heat it as required by your taps/showers and heating system, meaning there is no need for large water tanks in the home

System Boilers

Work in a similar way to combi boilers as they take their water from the mains storage system, but then store their hot water in a separate storage tank in order to provide instant hot water.  They are the ideal option for larger homes with a high hot water demand.

Regular Boilers

A regular boiler is the oldest type of boiler system available and works by drawing its hot water from a large cold water tank in the loft or attic, heating that in the boiler, and then delivering that hot water to a hot water storage tank.
